With the new year beckoning, it’s time we all have a think about what resolutions we want to set and changes we want to make in the new year. Resolutions are popular – in 2021, a Finder.com survey found that, in the UK, nearly 55% of people planned to set one. The data doesn’t go as far to say if they were successful though!

That might be because your typical resolutions like giving up alcohol, fatty foods, or going out were scientifically proven by researchers at Stockholm University in 2020 to be less successful than ones that have a goal in mind. Starting a new hobby can be a great goal-oriented idea for a resolution, and regardless, a great way to try new things, boost your skills, and improve your wellbeing.

Fitness

Getting active is a classic resolution, but adopting fitness as more of a hobby could pay dividends, helping you keep up the habit.

There are all sorts of fitness-related hobbies out there, from hiking and fell running, to local running groups, water polo, tennis, archery; the sky really is the limit with this one!

Electronics

It might seem like an odd choice but starting a hobby in electronics can be a great way for technically minded people and those who like designing and creating things. Things like robots, smart devices, and much more.

Using simple and straightforward single board computers like Beagleboard which are designed for newcomers and hobbyists, you can code your creations open-source Linux software and the host of free guides out there.

Cooking

As well as helping you get healthier by banishing high-calorie takeaways and ready meals from your fridge, learning to cook can be a great way to cut down on your eating costs, reduce the urge to eat out, and the best benefit: learning new and delicious recipes you can wow friends and family with!

An instrument

It’s never too late to learn a new instrument and bring the joy and creativity of music into your life! Whether you’ve always had designs of thrashing out tunes on guitar, playing soft classical flute, or jamming it out on sax, now is the best time to finally stop kicking the can down the road and start kicking a drum instead.

Learn a language

Whether you have a trip planned and want to be able to better converse with the locals and negotiate your chosen destination or have always loved the sound and feeling of a certain language, starting a hobby learning one is a great idea. Evening classes, apps, paid lessons; there are lots of options available when learning too.
