What is fluorite?

The fluorite stone (also called fluorspar) is a common mineral in nature that can be luminous under certain circumstances. It has a glassy luster and a variety of bright colors including purple, yellow, green, blue, pink and rainbow.

When was fluorite discovered?

Fluorite was first mentioned by the German mineralogist G. Agricola in his work in 1529.

Around 1775, mining of fluorite began in England and United States followed between 1800 and 1840, but large-scale mining only occurred after the development and promotion of flat-furnace steelmaking.

In 1797, the Italian engineer Carlos Antônio Napion officially named the mineral “Fluorite”. The word is derived from the Latin word “fluere”, meaning “to flow”, because it was often used as a co-solvent in the melting of metals.

A long history

The excavation of fluorite originated in ancient Egypt, when people widely used fluorite to make statues and carvings in the shape of holy beetles.

During the Neolithic era, the Hemudu people of China used fluorite for decoration.

In ancient Rome, fluorite was widely used as a precious stone for wine cups and vases. The Romans even believed that fluorite wine cups would make people unable to get drunk.

Fluorite properties

Fluorite (also called fluorspar) is a common mineral in nature. It has a glassy luster, a wide range of bright colors including purple, yellow, green, blue, pink and rainbow, a brittle and soft texture (4 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness).

What type of rock is fluorite?

What is fluorite made of? The main component of the fluorite stone is calcium fluoride (CaF₂). It can be symbiotic with many other minerals, and is produced in many parts of the world.

Fluorescence: Oh yes, fluorite glows!

Under ultraviolet light, fluorite fluoresces in blue, purple, green, red or yellow. Some fluorite stones are more light-sensitive and can glow when exposed to direct light or by rubbing their surface.

Fluorite can glow for dozens of hours after the fluorescent light. However, such light is relatively weak. It is almost invisible in the daytime, but very bright at night.

The reason why fluorite glows is because, when it is irradiated and stimulated by external energy, the electrons within the stone will move from a low-energy state to a high-energy state.

And when the external energy stimulation stops, the electrons again change from a high-energy state into the low-energy state. In this process, the fluorite crystal glows.

How does fluorite form?

Fluorite comes from the remnants of volcanic magma. During the cooling process of the magma, the gas-water solution separated by the magma contains many substances, mainly fluorine.

As the solution rises along the fissure, the temperature drops and the pressure decreases, the fluorine ions in the gas-water solution combine with the calcium ions in the surrounding rock to form calcium fluoride, which is then cooled and crystallized to become fluorite.

What color is fluorite?

Pure fluorite is transparent. However, the crystal structure of fluorite has “voids” that are easily filled with other ions. This is why pure, colorless fluorite is extremely rare in nature.

Impurities like iron, magnesium and copper ions make it a very colorful mineral. Common fluorite colors include purple, yellow, green, blue, pink, champagne, brown and rainbow.

In fact, fluorite has such a wide range of colors that it is called the most colorful mineral in the world.

Heat treatment to change or enhance the color

Heat treatment is common in the market. For exmaple, dark blue to black fluorite can be made blue by heating.

Generally speaking, it is difficult to identify if a fluorite stone is heat-treated or not, as the color is stable in environments below 300°C.

On the night of the full moon, place the crystals on a windowsill facing the moon. You can also place them outside if it is safe to do so. If needed, cover them with a glass jar or bowl to provide extra protection. Moonlight will charge the crystals overnight.
